On Friday the guy who switches the wind on must have had a lay in, because it didn’t start until about midday, giving us the opportunity to sun ourselves for a couple of hours and experience the bizarre Mar Menor. This ‘lesser’ sea is a salt water lagoon and all the websites say its waters are much warmer than the Med proper. Not true. But once we’d got over the ankle aching coldness, we set off to see if the other claim was true. This one was: you could indeed walk and walk and still the water was only up to your knees. I got so far out I had to phone Kevin to tell him what time I'd be back on the beach.

Anyway, that evening we packed with glee for the first time in our lives, and then prepared for our ‘last supper’.

Despite the disasters of the holiday, the hotel I have to say was the saving grace that kept us sane. Had this been anything less than superb, we probably would have caught the next flight home.

This place had an extremely helpful concierge, free wireless internet in the room, a bed the size of our entire bedroom at home, and very posh, huge fluffy towels that wrapped round and round and round. I have never seen hotel towels that big in all my travels! Still, something had to be less than perfect didn’t it? Of course. It was the mini bar – no funciona. The lights were on but the cooling system wasn't at home. Put your mineral water in there and it came out ready to make a cup of tea. And someone had kindly left us a hardened bacon and egg sandwich in there as a welcome present, which had, as you can imagine, smelt amazing.

Still, never mind. Last night, fine dining awaits us.

The hotel restaurant was one of those places where they pinch your wine then come back and fill your glass up when they think you look thirsty. Good selection of vinos though, €20 a bottle but very gluggable indeed and bottles complete with dust – always enhances the taste I think.

We arrived for our meal and sat ourselves down at our ‘usual’ table in eager anticipation of the culinary delights that lay ahead.

We were immediately fussed over and given complimentary tequila sunrises followed by canapés galore and everything looked like a memorable last night would be enjoyed by all.

We ordered our meals: veal fillet medium cooked. We'd asked for it well done on a previous night and it was over-cooked, so we thought we'd take a chance on medium.

Most nights we’d waited quite a considerable amount of time for our meals to arrive, as is the norm with fresh food and something that doesn’t bother us in the least.

However, here was our food heading towards us in worryingly little time. And there was a big problem.

What should have been a dinky pile of tender meat surrounded by some fashionably crunchy vegetables on an over-sized plate was, well far from that. We were presented with said over-sized plate - but its entire surface was covered in meat that was the complete opposite to how it had turned up earlier in the week. This was completely raw! And then on closer inspection we realised it wasn’t even raw meat, it was just fat.

It really did make us feel ill. The staff noticed immediately that we were unhappy and asked if we'd like something else. However, by this time Kevin had already had to make a trip to the gentleman's conveniences and my eyes were popping out of my head trying to 'keep it all down'.

Despite telling the maître-di that we were no longer hungry, cakes and chocolates kept appearing on our table. We were so full and feeling rough that we couldn't even look at them – we couldn’t even finish our lovely wine. We had no choice but to ask for the bill and were told that we didn't have to pay. A good gesture, but really we'd have preferred to have paid for a decent meal rather than feel ill on our last night.

So we're back in the room, its 11.30pm and our alarms are set to get up at 6am to make the airport taxi. Then there's a knock at the door and after a panic stricken display of grabbing dressing gowns and ruffling hair I opened it to be met with a tray of Moet and strawberries and a red rose presented courtesy of the maître -di who really wasn't used to seeing me looking anything less than glamorous.

Sadly there was no way we could drink champagne at that time of the night before such an early start, or take it through liquid-banned security at the airport the next day, so the maid had a bit of a result the next day!

So, just one more small instalment to come – Murcia Airport – possibly the smallest airport in the world.

Can you make any recommendations for our new member weemo on where to eat when they visit Tossa for the first time? See the posting under restaurant recommendations.

They have the same set-up as you two, same as Kevin and I too - one is a fish lover and the other a pure carnivore. Cheers!

I have been working really, really hard today. I have written about everything from choosing glasses to Status Quo concerts, from green cleaning to stress balls, and my brain isn't quite functioning at the level it was this morning.

I therefore apologise for accidentally deleting your reply about the small airport!
