Posted - 20/05/2007 : 19:36:12 Many of the businesses in Tossa are having problems getting staff and the Tossa TV is full of vacancies for Hotel & Bar staff. Our friend who owns Can Pasat has given up running the bar/restaurant as the Nat.Ins. tax has been a big problem. If you employ a person for only 1 day in a month your are liable for a full months National Insurance (equiv.)for the WHOLE month. She had 3 staff last year working for less than a week and then being ill or injured (one fell off a bike , another tripped and sprained her ankle) and had to pay their wages and tax for a full month! Also many hotel staff are now looking for 12 months work and moving to the Canaries . Locals can work for the 7 month season and then work as gardeners or painters in the winter but the resort depends on outsiders for the summer and business is suffering.

Posted - 25/05/2007 : 08:54:07 Hola John,
Hope you and Anne had a fab holiday in Roquetas. Sorry, can't help you much with the info you seek as much has changed in Spain since I was resident there. Suggest you contact your nearest Spanish Consul or Labour office[there is one in Manchester, perhaps there is one in Glasgow or Edinburgh]. Looking forward to seeing you in September. |

Posted - 24/05/2007 : 19:26:57 Hola Sandra, Is moving to Spain as a worker,a bit of a minefield with regard to the legal requirements neccesary between employer and employee? Can a person who is new to working there be exploited,or are there guidelines which must be adhered to by both parties so as to provide an equality to both?

Posted - 22/05/2007 : 15:41:06 I think these problems have been building up over a period of years;as the world becomes smaller, some travellers prefer not to go to the same place twice; not good news for those trying to run a business and coping with employment regulations as well. |
