During our recent holiday in Tossa, we noticed an improvement in accessibilty for the disabled and wheelchair users. One major innovation during June was the introduction of Amphi Buggies to 2 beaches, the Mar Menuda and Playa Gran. With the help of the Cruz Roja staff, wheelchair users move to an Amphi Buggy, are wheeled into the sea where they can enjoy the buoyancy of the water. The Cruz Roja staff are on hand to help them from the water to the Amphi Buggy and then back into their wheelchairs. We observed how delighted people were with this service. No written information was available at the Town Hall but a spokesperson said they would be pleased if we spread the news.Does anyone know how we can spread the word to people booking holiays for the disabled/

Thanks Sandra for this extremely valuable information.
I have done some research and have found some associations that offer help and assistance to the disabled and elderly who are travelling abroad.
One of them, www.holidaycare.org produces guides on travel, accomodation and services for the disabled in various countries. They also have a staffed information unit. Their website is a great resource and includes links to other useful websites covering the same topics.
Another good website is www.tourismforall.org.uk/
But all these associations need to be made aware of the services offered in Tossa, otherwise they won't be able to pass the information on to those who need it. It is a shame the Town Hall are not actively promoting their latest venture. I will send my views to my contact at the Catalonia Tourist Board and see what they think, before I start doing anything myself!
I will keep you posted. |

I am going to add a section on services for the disabled to my Helpful Info pages.
I will include the information on the amphi-buggies, plus a list of useful weblinks. But I'm going to need other information like lists of hotels, restaurants and bars with disabled access, plus activities that are suitable for the disabled.
I'll see if the Tourist Office in Tossa can help but in the meantime if anyone has any information please send it to me.
Many thanks. |
