We were walking up towards the Mar Menuda beach last week and we noticed that the little beach in between Playa Gran and Mar Menuda - Playa del Reig - had disappeared! The sea had come right in and covered the bottom of the steps.
The beach as we'd known it for the past ten years had always been tiny, you'd always see a handful of sunbathers dotted about but it was never very busy. However, when we picked up a rather dated postcard showing the view from Mar Menuda to the Vila Vella, we realised just how much that beach had diminished! The postcard showed the beach with a good 50 or so sunbathers on it, lots of parasols and a fair amount of space, almost as much as you currently find on Es Codolar. Not sure what year the postcard dated back to but the promenade wall looked very new. Any guesses?
Does anyone have any memories of when this little beach was inhabitable?
Also thought it was about time Tossa's shops got some new postcards in!
In 1982 there were only iron railings on the prom. at this point, but we think that the new concrete posts were there on our next visit the following year. Old Jack used to take his wife down to that little beach before the steps were installed and she died 1983/84 He also noticed that the beach had completely gone. We think that the main beach too was smaller and certainly shelved off into the sea much more steeeply. Maybe the stormy seas before we arrived have played a major part in the transformation.
I snorkled around there and discovered that all of the sand has been washed away and there is now no place to sit , even at low tide. Looking at the main beach from underwater I noticed it shelved in 3 stages (of various size of sand , gravel and then larger gravel ) so it must have been reformed by the earlier storms. I havn't seen it as bad since 1994 before the dredgers arrived in October with the new beach. Perhaps Andrea can ask hubby to ask the Council what are they going to do about it?
