"The increasing use of regional languages in Spain is causing confusion among visitors according to tourism bosses. Languages such as Catalan in the northeast and the Balearics, Basque in Pais Vasco and Navarra, and Galician in the northwest are even replacing Castilian Spanish on road signs and notice boards. The issue is a sensitive one for the Government since the languages were suppressed during the thirty years of Franco rule."

It is a problem and I wonder if they realise the affect it has on tourists-even the coloured waste bins are in Catalan.
One can understand their pride in their culture but it is the tourist that has made Tossa so affluent.Perhaps a note to the Town Hall would be appropriate , or words with someone on the Council!

The answer, surely, is for us to try and learn Catalan. I wish I had, as it is similar, in many respects to the French language, which i still remember from school days.

Even Andrea is not good with Catalan, even though her husband is a native of Tossa.

Are you saying that I cannot pick an arguement in Catalan? I think that my husband would safely back me up when I say that I can.

I know you can do that. We've seen the way he looks at you and heard the tone of your voice, even though we don't understand the language!
