We have been twice on organised trips through Travel Companies to the outskirts of Barcelona on a visit to Montserrat, the Holy place of Catalunya,. It is a place of pilgrimage to visit the statue of the Black Madonna, and also hear the choirboys who are based in a school near the Church.
The story goes that it is quite common for firstborn daughters to be called Montserrat. Remember Freddie Mercury singing "Barcelona" with the Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballe??
The journey up the mountain has spectacular views, when we went to the Church it didn't seem much from the outside, but inside it is lovely. You will see the queue to see the "Black Madonna" where people stop for a few moments and pay homage. We queued for ages before we got to see the statue, and were a little disappointed as it is much smaller than we imagined. If you really want to see the "Black Madonna" look at the copy of her in the Church at Tossa, you won't have to queue.
You will know when the choir is due to practise as the Church becomes full to overflowing, you may not actually see the choir, but the sound coming from the front of the Church is wonderful, well worth the push and shove.
Outside there are some beautiful views, and paths that take you downwards. You can also take the funicular further up to the top of the mountain where the view is even better.
Of course there is the Monastery where monks go about their daily tasks. You can see a slide show, with soundtrack by the choir, showing a day in the life of a monk. Well worth the small entrance fee.
There are of course shops selling souvenirs, bars and cafes for the thirsty and hungry.
We would certainly go again to the Holy Mountian

We would love to live in Tossa !!!
